When do I begin Designing?

Remodel: When you know you are committed to doing the project within 3- 6 months. (more time needed if major renovations are in order, and architects are involved)

New Construction: The time to design is 2 to 4 months before you break ground, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Custom companies take 8 - 12 or more weeks for your order to deliver. Semi-Custom companies take 6-8 weeks. Wellborn takes only 3 weeks to deliver - The fastest Mid-line cabinet company out there! These factors make a big difference on project time lines.

Choosing the right Designer

Start with the basics, How much experience do they have? Can you see a portfolio? Do you see kitchens that make sense... are attractive? Do you feel pressured by the designer - or do you feel at home in their shop? Some designers are Sales People first - Designers second - which do you want?

The kitchen process needs time to ripen... you should never feel rushed. Most of all...You need to be able to talk to your designer... this is the cornerstone for your new kitchen design... Without a good communication level - how can anyone design the right space for you?

How do I know my style?

Couples - get on the same page before you start designing...If you're not sure about what style you want... hit the book store! Sit down with a cup of coffee and sticky notes in hand... mark every page that looks good to you.. you will start to see a pattern... that's your style... Remember to include any significant other!

It's your designers job to make everyone happy with the space. We can't have one person loving it, and the other cringing. If you know you have very different tastes from your partner ... give yourself more design time. A good designer can happily marry everyone's wants and likes.

***Remember to be careful of asking all your friends what you should do... they all have a different opinion - and then you'll be really confused! This is your space and needs to reflect your likes. You have to live there!

What's it going to cost?

That's the big one! sit down with your designer, look over what you want, and assess the costs VS your budget.... some tweaking is always necessary. If you have a limited budget... please tell your designer... nothing worse than falling in love with a great design and finding out you just don't have the budget for it... A good designer can make a beautiful space with any budget!
